grip surface for exterior stairs - sluggo - 2009-07-11 10:59:00

Hi,
What are some good materials to place on the tread for my exterior stairs?
I've thought of thin wire (may cause a toe to catch on it though) and roof
shingles (which easily shed/wear), but I think there must be some better
materials.
thanks

They actually sell material for this application, which looks like a
cross between shingles and wet/dry sandpaper...

We had this stuff in the Navy called non-skid. It goes on like
paint. I don't know where you'd buy it, though. Maybe West
Marine?

Have been dealing with this for quite some time on outside wooden
stairs and handicap ramps.

First thing tried was the adhesive sandpaper strips. They will peal
off painted wooden surfaces eventually. If you have snow the snow
shovel will catch the edge and speed up the process.

Second thing tried was putting grit into the paint. I believe it is
silica sand sold at paint stores for this purpose. It works but only
creates limited traction.

Third thing I might try eventually is something like stapling horse
shoe shaped staples into the wood in a random pattern. Stainless if
available or just paint over the top when done. A method like this
should work the best, assuming wooden stairs.

Maybe that chunky truck-bed stuff would work just as well?

You can find truck-bed liner by the quart at Walmart, but I can't
remember if they also have the chunky stuff.
