The Kreepy Krawley (however you spell it) works for 5-6 minutes,
stops, starts again after backwash, works 5-6 minutes, repeat process.
Any suggestions as to what the problem might be and how to fix it?

Are you saying the only time it works is for 5 mins immediately after backwashing? If so, that would seem to suggest a water flow rate problem. The automatic cleaners need some minimum flow rate to work. It could be you have a clogged filter problem and backwashing gets the flow open enough. But the strange part is that it only lasts 5 mins.
How old is the Kreepy Krauly? After 3-4 years [in Hawaii] they get very tempermental and require just the right suction.
